The first documents related to the territory of Alagna and Riva dates back to the year one thousand. The territory under Mont Rosa belonged to the monasteries of S. Nazzaro and S. Pietro.
The age of Walser
In the transformation process of medieval economy, the influence of the monasteries and the presence of feudal lords, who started transalpine commerce, favoured the settling of Walser colonies.
The separation from Pietre Gemelle
The arrival of the Walser and the colonization of the head valley of Sesia, increased the community of Pietre Gemelle’s population, culture and wealth.
The 20th century, the ski lift on M. Rosa
The tourist development and drastic economic change experienced by Alagna and Riva at the end of the 19th century transformed the centre of Alagna. Beautiful villas in Liberty style were erected.
The Manganese mines story
Manganese is a metal used by man since prehistoric times: manganese dioxidepigments have been found in cave paintings of 17,000 years ago.
Punta Indren Story
With the first installations of the Belvedere lifts, it was expressed the desire of Alagna to be connected to his mountain the Monterosa. In the early 60s thanks to the engineer Giorgio Rolandi dream takes shape.
