Off-piste snowboarding, or simply freeride snowboarding, is a well-known sport and practised by many. More and more enthusiasts filled with adrenalin descend snowboard off-pistes at full speed, thanks to the evolution of the boards and clothing, which are essential to slide on fresh snow in the name of fun and comfort. In Italy and abroad, there are many places where you can practise this type of sport. Just think of countries such as Canada, the United States, Iceland, Norway, but also Italy, with its Alps and the numerous locations where you can enjoy miles of white powder. Italy is considered by many as the European capital of freeride, paradise for ski and snowboard lovers. Here you have the opportunity to try a sport that requires technical skills and various capabilities almost all year round, but that can be mastered by anyone with some training and experience. Let's first look at the best routes and mountains for freeride snowboarding, and then move on to some advice regarding safety.
Ever heard of freeride paradise? If the answer is no, good for you, because you are about to discover one of the most beautiful destinations for off-piste snowboarding and skiing: Monte Rosa. Here, in the municipality of Alagna Valsesia on the Italian side of the Eastern Alps, there are some very exciting slopes. Miles and miles of immaculate itineraries including gullies, canyons, glaciers, valleys and much, much more. The highlight, in addition to the spectacular nature of the landscape, is the ease of access to the starting points. The Monterosa Ski lifts take you to the top of the mountains to put you in reach of most of these spots, for example towards Passo dei Salati (2980 meters above sea level) or, even higher, towards the wonderful Indren glacier (3375 meters) ). Once you get off the cable car, with your backpack and snowboard on your shoulder, all you have to do is continue in the direction of your favorite off-piste. Need some ideas? Take a look at the off-piste page and the map we have prepared!
Up till now you have been given the basic information to organize an excursion on your own. You must, however, remember that Monte Rosa and the Eastern Alps in general are steeped in immense space, with difficult, if not impossible places to reach on foot. In these cases the alternative is called Heliski Freeride, and it’s a fantastic solution to enjoy the wildest off-piste ride with the aid of a five-seater helicopter.
Everything is managed with absolute respect for nature and the alpine ecosystem: so only ten flights per day are allowed in eight different landing sites on Monte Rosa, in Alagna Valsesia. The groups are made up of a maximum of four snowboarders and a guide, so if there are more people it will be necessary to book two or three helicopters. Nothing stops you from experiencing pure adrenaline even in pairs, and it goes without saying that the cost of the helicopter flight and guide lowers according to the number of participants. Here is an indicative price list to evaluate the rates:
Individual quote | 1 flight | 2 flights |
2 skiers | 470 euro per person | 780 euro per person |
3 skiers | 310 euro per person | 520 euro per person |
4 skiers | 240 euro per person | 390 euro per person |
Like ski mountaineering, freeriding with a snowboard or skis exposes you to risks and significant hazards in every season of the year, even when the weather conditions are perfect. We must not only think about avalanches, but also about the crevasses, slabs of ice, jumps and various obstacles. Breaking a leg or fracturing an arm in an isolated place can have dramatic consequences not only for the injured, but also for group members. It is essential to be aware of your limitations, making sure you have the kit with essential accessories in case of emergency. The freeride kit composed of ARVA, shovel and probe is of fundamental importance. ARVA ,an acronym which stands for Avalanche Research Apparatus, is an electronic device. It is a short-range signal transceiver, which allows for an easier search and find rescue in case of being buried under snow (not necessarily avalanche, as this phenomenon represents a greater danger during an off-piste adventure).
Probe and blade are useful manual tools to facilitate search operations (the probe) and excavation (the blade). To this we must then add a series of advice usually taken for granted, but too often underestimated. From a thorough check of the equipment and provisions to put in the backpack, including energy snacks and mineral salts, from a session or two preliminaries in the gym or fitness exercises for a few days to help adjust to the environment at high altitude. Our UIAGM guides (Union Internationale des Associations de Guides de Montagnes) are the perfect contacts, because they are qualified for this kind of freeride excursions and because they can provide support before, during and after the descent.
If you also want to experience authentic off-piste snowboarding, or if you want to give this friend or partner an adventure, all you have to do is choose one of the snow pack options and contact our offices in time. Enjoy the fresh snow, we'll take care of the rest!
Discover all the freeride opportunities and all the winter activities in Alagna
Every winter the Alps attract sportsmen and tourists from all over the world in search of relaxation, adrenaline and leisure. Winter activities in the Eastern Alps are numerous and are suitable for adults and children alike. Monte Rosa is part of the Alpine mountain range in Alagna and is among the favourite destinations for a winter break in the Alps: the activities for tourists are very rich and diversified, both for those who love skiing, and for those who have no interest in this discipline, but just want to spend their time at high altitudes, far from the chaos of big cities. A single week of vacation at the slow pace of the mountain is all you need to restore your spirit, body and mind. So, with the help of this article let's see the 9 winter activities you can do in the Alps in the company of friends, with family or even by yourself!
Best known as one of the largest and most organized ski areas in the Alps, Monterosa Ski ensures fantastic days of sports and outdoor activities for everyone, from beginners to athletes with some experience. With its 180 km of slopes and 45 ski lifts, Monterosa Ski is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the Western Alps, thanks also to the vertiginous heights reached by the slopes, you are guaranteed to have quality snow for most of the winter.
There are those who ski on the slopes and those who prefer ... off-piste! It is certainly not a coincidence that Alagna Valsesia and Monte Rosa are called by true enthusiasts with their second name of freeride paradise. The "pink powder" here is seen as a religion and has an army of faithful followers. Routes such as the Vallone d'Oden, La Balma or the Zube Canyon provide emotional experiences that are difficult to describe. As always attention must be paid to the dangers: each ski outing should be planned with the help of qualified mountain guides, who are the only ones capable of providing the necessary support to those who want to enjoy the descent safely.
Seal skins, skis with bindings and heels, probe shovel and Artva: ski touring is another winter activity not to be missed for those who find themselves on the Alps in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley. The three valleys situated in our territory, thanks to the presence of chair lifts, cableways and modern cable cars, become the ideal stage for adventurous ski touring, the kind that gives you an adrenalin rush. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the ploughed pistes to reach the spots from where to start your descent. And if you do not know where to start, remember that it is possible to organize group outings with UIAGM guides.
If classic off-piste and the most extreme ski touring type are not enough for you... Then you have to try heliski, the ultimate frontier for freeride purists. Helicopters fly over the Alps and transport skiers and snowboarders to places that are otherwise inaccessible: like gullies and valleys of fresh snow in which to immerse themselves with all their energy. But without putting any strain on nature as the flights are limited and heavily regulated in respect of wild animals, territory, flora and of course the mountains. Weather conditions and snow permitting, an activity that can be practised until late spring, excellent for friends, couples or even numerous groups divided into groups of four per helicopter.
So far we have seen winter activities catered for ski or snowboard lovers. But there are many other things to do in the Alps that do not require padded protection and snow boots. For example, soaking in the hot water and soothing vapours of our SPAs and wellness centers while gazing at the spectacle of the snow falling copiously outside. In the municipality of Alagna - Valsesia there are five structures dedicated to wellness and hydrotherapy and at the cost of an entrance ticket, you have a Finnish sauna, a Turkish bath, emotional showers, a pampering bath and pampering galore just waiting for you!
In winter until mid-February the skating ring of Alagna is active, and it’s a valid alternative for adults and children who want to stretch their legs without having to trudge through snow and climb heights. Skating in the Alps or playing ice hockey is something magical, and a small and fleeting distraction suitable for any age, facilitated by a wide assortment of boots for hire.
Do you need to stretch your muscles, admire the landscape, improve your breathing, relax your mind ...? For these and other needs, snow yoga is the answer! As the name suggests, it is about practicing meditation in snowy spaces, from simple plateaus to public gardens. Led by expert teachers, participants will have the opportunity to practise yoga sessions wearing appropriate clothing, filling their lungs with the clean air of our mountains.
When you decide to wear boots and snowshoes for a walk in the woods, you might be disconcerted by the number of beaten paths (and not) in the Alps. Long or short, uphill or flat, suitable for anyone including those with a high technical level, the routes and tracks to do in the snow are truly numerous. Some suggestive trails are explored in the Winter Walks section of our website, while others can be explored in more detail using maps and illustrated books or participating in one of the group outings that are organized during the winter season, both during the day and in the fascinating night version.

To sleep at high altitudes has always been a dream for many travellers. From expert mountaineers to young couples passionate about trekking, the desire to fall asleep at record altitudes and to wake up surrounded by majestic landscapes has led to the development of a highly appreciated type of tourism over the years. Today, sleeping at high altitudes is a possibility offered by many structures, both in summer and to a lesser extent even in winter. The Western Alps, in particular, offer various locations at a variety of elevated altitudes, in remote areas or in the vicinity of places that are easy to reach, even by car. Amongst all of these, stands the highest refuge in Europe, Capanna Margherita, which despite its name is a comfortable and organized accommodation structure, with up to 70 beds and a room used as a bar and restaurant. But we will not tell you more: in this article, we listed, in order of height above sea level, the 10 refuges of Monte Rosa and where to sleep at high altitudes without necessarily being skilled climbers. Enjoy browsing and ... have good rest once you get to the top!
The highest of all the Monte Rosa refuges and to date, in the whole of Europe, Capanna Regina Margherita is synonymous with adventure and the environment: perched on Punta Gnifetti, this ambitious work of human ingenuity offers different types of accommodation for sleeping at a high altitude, from half board to B&B. The only way to reach it is on foot, and you are advised to be accompanied by UIAGM mountain guides. By clicking on the link, you will find more information on Capanna Regina Margherita.
Heated rooms, free showers, drying machine for boots and clothes ... despite the altitude, refuge Capanna Gnifetti has all the essential amenities for sleeping comfortably at a high altitude during the summer (only one room is open in winter). It can accommodate 177 people in total, divided between rooms with 4/6 bunk beds and rooms with 12beds. For those facing the ascent to Capanna Margherita, the structure is a strategic point of support where to spend the night
Renovated in 2007, refuge Mantova is located on the Garstelet glacier, in the Garstelt area. The beautiful panorama at an altitude of almost 3,500 meters can be admired in all its splendour through the windows of the restaurant: the view sweeps across the whole of Monte Rosa and the Alpine chain to Mont Blanc and Gran Paradiso. It can accommodate 100 people divided between rooms with three, four and seven beds, and an extra 30-bed dormitory.
This refuge owes its name to its original use in the past centuries: it was the canonical Nicolao Sottile, in 1823, who converted the structure into a structure to provide hospitality to travellers who travelled along this important access road. After undergoing major renovations, refuge Ospizio Sottile today, functions as a hotel and restaurant business on that same pass between Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta, offering 4 comfortable rooms and a 9-bed dormitory, toilets with 2 showers and the restaurant hall where you can savour traditional Alpine dishes.
Stopover point during the ascent to the northern ridge of Tagliaferro, Refuge Ferioli is located halfway between the furthest refuges and the normal ones found on the ski slopes. The stone and wood cabin, resting on the moraine below Colle Mud, is characterized by its splendid terrace which faces the valley and ensures a memorable view of the town of Alagna. It can be reached in about 2 hours and 30 minutes along trail n. 8 from the hamlet San Nicolao of Alagna. It sleeps 24.
A real eagle's nest perched on the rock that supports the imposing moraine side of the Sesia-Locce glacier, the refuge Barba Ferrero, at 2,247 meters above sea level, was inaugurated in 1996 with the financial support of the Barba family and of the Ferrero family (hence the name). Today it has 12 beds (4 in the winter room) which must be booked, either half board or B & B to experience the thrill of sleeping in a picturesque setting with your family, with friends or alone.
Don’t be fooled by the name: Carestia is actually the surname of the botanist and alpinist, Antonio Carestia, to whom the refuge is dedicated. The actual structure replaced the previous building in 1995 and since then, the 30 beds in refuge Carestia offer mountain lovers guaranteed rest during high-altitude walks and hikes. The aged atmosphere of this corner of the Vogna Valley takes the visitor back to an era of traditions, sacrifices, peaceful and mutual solidarity.
Rooms with a wooden interior with bathrooms on the same floor, sauna (in winter), hot showers, but above all, a kitchen serving high-quality dishes, mentioned in the prestigious Gambero Rosso and Le strade del Gusto guides. These are the distinctive features of the refuge Grande Halte, a crossroads for trekkers and skiers from all over the world, for those who face the ascent to Col d'Olen and for others to enjoy the descending pistes of Monterosaski on a snowboard or skis. If you want, you can also get to the Pianalunga station by cable car and then cover the 500 meters that lead to the refuge (therefore also suitable for very young children and parents with strollers).
The ninth refuge where you can sleep at high altitudes is called Baita sociale Alpe Campo and is located at 1923 meters above sea level. You can easily get to the hamlet Ronco of Alagna, in 2 hours of walking along trail n ° 209 (ex n ° 9). From here it is possible to continue along several trails to reach some of the most beautiful spots on Monte Rosa, from Bocchetta della Moanda at a height of 2422 meters to Alpe Sattal at 2007 meters above sea level.
The last refuge on this list is called Crespi Calderini in honour of Anna Calderini, a mountaineer of the early '900. Located on the spectacular Alpe Bors plain, it has only 4 beds and a small dining room. Outside a covered terrace makes your stay more pleasant, especially when it rains. It takes about 1 hour on foot to reach, by way of Refuge Pastore. It is an exciting destination for anyone who wants to explore the Western Alps and sleep at high altitudes between green meadows, waterfalls, rocks and crystal clear lakes.

In Alagna Valsesia, freeride by helicopter or heliskiing ensures an unforgettable experience to make fantastic memories. Your day of heliskiing starts early in the morning: you have a rich breakfast, load the equipment and fly to the snowy peaks, alone or in the company of friends. The high altitude valleys that roll down onto the territory of Alagna, submerged in snow even in spring, offer numerous locations where you can enjoy the snow, both on skis and on snowboards.
Here Freeride is always an adventure, but this is not to say that there are no rules, on the contrary: every flight and heliski activity is managed by following a rigid disciplinary code, to ensure adequate safety standards and to leave the delicate mountain ecosystem undisturbed. Those of us who live and work in these valleys are the first to want the environment to remain intact. How do we meet this need with the practice of helicopter freeriding?
Let's find out!
There are places in the world where freeriding by helicopter is practised without any rules, and with obvious negative consequences in the long term. Here in Alagna it is different because everyone and everything is taken into consideration : you, the tourists; we, the inhabitants of the valleys and last, but not least, the animals that inhabit this wonderful area. But what precautions do we follow to avoid causing damage and accidents?
First of all, trips are carried out, only and only, in perfect weather conditions, with the consent of the pilot and UIAGM alpine guides who, by law, always accompany the skiers. Visibility, snow and all other factors that play an important role in a successful trip must be optimal, otherwise it is postponed. Also considering the fact that we are situated inside the Alta Valsesia Natural Park, we limit the number of flights to maximum 10 a day for no more than 8 days a month.
In random places? Absolutely not!
Helicopters for freeride are allowed to only land in designated areas, i.e. in 8 pitches where there is no danger of disturbing the animals or ruining the soil. The white partridges, the eagles, the ibex and the martens living in these mountains must continue to reproduce in peace and consider man not as an enemy, but as a habitual presence, which does not pose any threat. And, in terms of size, our habbo model helicopters are compact and carry a maximum of 4 people in addition to the pilot and the guide.
This means that if there are numerous groups, they will be divided and dropped on two different locations or they will do the descent at different times. This allows us to combine tourist demand with respect for the mountain and its breathtaking landscapes.
Many people think that helicopter freeriding is a sport for the chosen few: too expensive for a "normal" person. This is not the case: tariffs range from one extreme to another, according to the needs of each person. There are skiers who want to enjoy a solo descent and therefore, pay the highest amount, but there are also groups of friends who fill up the helicopter and then share the cost amongst four participants.
If you then book several days, you can reduce the costs of travel and accommodation, with an additional savings margin. Here is an example. One freeride day for a single skier costs € 990 all included (flight, guide, safety kit), while the same day, for four, only costs € 260 (less than a third!). But when is the best time to go heliskiing? It is usually from 6 January to 15 April, but we always recommend calling for updated information on the opening and closing dates of the season.
We are sure that you will take to freeriding too: book now and enjoy the fresh snow!

The winter season which has just ended has confirmed a trend common to many Alpine resorts. Little snow at lower altitudes, and only for a limited period. In some countries the first flakes were seen in late January, and in others even in February. Luckily here in Alagna snow is plentiful, thanks to its altitude and position which ensure snowfalls in our territory as soon as the temperatures drops. But in this small oasis of peace in the Western Alps there's much more: if the meadows are green and blossom again in Alagna, there is a place where the thrill of adventure and fresh snow will last for many more months. The challenge is about to begin: every year we prepare for the upcoming opening of Rifugio Capanna Margherita, the most charming, most scenic and definitely the highest in Europe. With its 4.456 meters above sea level, Capanna Margherita, the other name it is known for, is situated on top of Punta Gnifetti in the Monte Rosa mountain range, attracting hiking enthusiasts both in winter and in summer. In summer the ascent to Capanna Margherita is less difficult, but also accessible to non professionals, even with all the meteorological and climatic conditions that can make an outing such as this quite challenging. Naturally, not just anyone will succeed: it takes a certain level of physical preparation, a good dose of courage and, as always, we advise the support of UIAGM alpine guides . The next step now, is taking the first step towards the summit and ... go!
In winter the ascent to Capanna Margherita is possibile but the rooms inside are closed. Therefore, the best time to take advantage of what the refuge can offer is during the mid months of summer, thanks to the perfect organization of the structure and mindful management which pays careful attention to environmental issues. In fact Capanna Margherita is equipped with every comfort you can think of at high altitude, from bar and restaurant facilities to electric lighting and it has a quality certificate UNI EN ISO 14001 (certifying a minimum impact on the surrounding environment). There is an Internet connection and even a small library where you can spend some time in absolute tranquility in the company of a good book. The surrounding landscape is sublime with a view that sweeps over the glaciers and Parrot, Lyskamm, Zumstein and Dufour peaks.
The structure sleeps 70 in rooms with bunk beds, so it is advisable to plan ahead and book to ensure a place even if you only plan to stay for one day! Opening of the refuge in 2016 will run from 18th June to 11th September. The dates are indicative so please double-check our website or better yet, subscribe to our newsletter or follow our Facebook page . As always, we strongly suggest, prudence . Remember that the climb is very tecnical and you must have the necessary and appropriate skills and be in the company of expert guides if you do not have it. A little common sense will amply reward your effort for such a high climb. Prepare your boots ….and let’s go!

Curiosities
It was built in 1870 and was first given the name “Villa dei Fiori”. It was only composed by three large apartments that were rented out to the rich tourists that used to spend their summer in Alagna at the beginning of the XX Century.
After WW1 was bought by Pietro Smitt, former gunner who made its fortune in France as decorator.
From there the name. Today the house is run by Anna, who wants to transform it into an ideal place for families, because she likes houses with a lot of children. The apartments have all two bedrooms to grant peaceful sleeps to parents and kids, a large living to spend time together and a kitchen, in order to give space to the cooks, that we know, are irritable whilst cooking.
This B&B is also located in an old villa formerly built with the purpose of hosting rich families of the early 900 with their servants. The old style of the house has been maintained after the recent refurbishment, but the name is completely new and express the owner's philosophy. Three is the recurrent and lucky number of the family; the Tree is the essence: symbol of sustainability and balance, sturdy roots and foliage free to follow the wind. And those trees are also free, free because the Sesia Valley in 1400 declared its freedom in fron of the Duke of Milan, and even now the people like their freedom above every thing
Mirtillo is Father Christmas' raindeer, the red nosed one, that seems to be settled there to pep up the days of families on holidays around the Monte Rosa. For him Stefano decided to build an adequate house: 60 family rooms, one in and outdoor swimming pool, buffet restaurant and miniclub.
Who said that you only visit Alagna to ski? Obviously freeride paradise, and Monterosaski generally represent the main attractions during the winter season, but it offers many other alternative ways to relax. If there is a place to satisfy your desire for hiking, even with snowshoes, that place is Monte Rosa. There are so many trails: short, medium, long, with slight uphill or steep, outdoors in the shade of the woods, following a stream or through the beautiful valleys of Alagna-Valsesia. There is a really wide range of choice, suitable for all levels of experience or age. Just the thought makes you want to put on your boots and go! But be careful: the first rule to enjoy the best hiking experience alone or in the company is knowing the hiking trails. Because there are so many trails and all of them valid, you should know how to orientate yourself, not only geographically, but also in terms of trail selection. A linear path is not necessarily suitable, even for little children, and it is possible that a route at high altitude might be more practical for those who do not have much experience. The important thing is to have a map handy. To facilitate the task, we have prepared one especially for you!
ATTRACTIONS, JOURNEY TIME, VERTICAL DROP AND DIFFICULTY
On the trail map of Alagna Valsesia- Monte Rosa, you will find lots of useful information to organize your adventure hike. For each route we have indicated, in order from left to right, the international numbering, the destination, the altitude, the difficulty, the travel time and what the level of satisfaction is according to our dispassionate opinion. For the level of difficulty, one of the highlights of any hiking map, we used the symbols of the traffic light. 1 green dot for easy trails, 2 yellow dots for medium trails, 3 red dots for the difficult paths. The word "alpine" signals paths that require a significant technical level. We have also reserved a brief introduction to cultural, sport and tips about the communes of Alagna and Riva Valdobbiadene.
To complete the map, in addition to the streetmap, here are three insights on what we believe are the most beautiful paths to be done in either spring, summer or fall. We are talking about Orteltol (No. 203), a hiking trail to discover the Walser settlements of Otro, rich in natural beauty, cultural, historical and artistic gems. Then there is the Old pass of Colle di Valdobbia (No. 201), from the village of Ca 'Janzo to the refuge Ospizio Sottile at an altitude of 2,480 meters above sea level. Finally the wonderful trail 206 - 206th - 207, dubbed "Under the glaciers of Monte Rosa", an itinerary that runs almost entirely within the natural park of High Valsesia, at the foot of the glaciers that fall down the valley from the south wall east of Monte Rosa. A unique spectacle for both the eyes and spirit!
